This is clearly NOT a typical E Lynn Harris book September 5, 2010 Jordan McCray (Wilmington, DE) This book appears to be a draft and not a completed novel. The divas in this novel are flat and very un-E lynn harris like. I found the story to be unbelievable and lacking consistency. Very very disappointed in this book.

Readers will miss E. Lynn Harris even more after reading In My Father's House. His talent for story telling is undeniably uniquely delivered. Harris penned a story of betrayal, love, and a secret society.
Bentley L. Dean is the sexy co-owner of Perfect Picture, a modeling agency. Due to the economy, business is not booming like it would be normally. During these times, Bentley misses his father more and more. No, his father is not deceased, but he wants nothing to do with Bentley while he is living the life that he is living. Doing as his father wishes could alleviate all his financial woes. Will Bentley forget the lessons he learned from his father? Or, will he continue to struggle causing him to do things he never saw himself doing? But is not every person entitled to love in all aspects of their life?
Jah is a college student Bentley has taken under his wings. Bentley encourages Jah to focus on school because something is missing from his life. However, when Jah has the opportunity of a lifetime, he jumps at the chance. He believes he will finally have all that he has been missing and much, much more. Is it really the thing he has been looking for? Or, will this be the final straw that will break him down to nothing?
There are so many layers to this book. Harris created characters whose emotions were raw and real. I got mad when they were mad. The relationships seemed so real. The thing that saddens me is Harris is no longer here to complete the lives of the people he created. I recommend In My Father's House to fans of E. Lynn Harris's work and to readers who have no issues with reading about homosexual relationships.

Leaves you Wanting More September 3, 2010 T. M. Craig (Ohio) In My Father's House is the last piece of work by the great author E. Lynn Harris. He did not disappoint as usual. In this story, we meet Bentley L. Dean who is a former model and he now owns a modeling agency in Miami. Bentley, who is a homosexual, was disowned by his father and their very prominent family in Detroit.
Bentley, like many other characters in Harris' books is having a tough time finding a man that will be his partner is an openly gay relationship. There is one man that has captured his heart, but when his professional and personal lives collide, Bentley must make a decision. Bentley must decide if he will do what is best for his professional life which could mean dealing with some very unflattering characters or his personal life which could put his soul at ease.
While I am sure that E. Lynn Harris intended this book to be the first of next installment of books, it ended with too many unanswered questions. Along with his previous works, this book was very well written and the relationships seemed so real. As a reader, I could feel the emotions of the characters and found myself wondering what decisions I would have made if in a similar situation. I highly recommend In My Father's house to anyone that is a fan of E. Lynn Harris' work.
Everything That Glitters Isn't Gold August 27, 2010 K. Augustine (Southern California) Tired of sneaking around with his male lover, Bentley Dean abruptly breaks it off with his beautiful fiancé and comes clean to her and his family that he is leaving her for a man. His father is appalled and promptly disowns him by pointing to his front door and stating, "Not in my house". He is an extremely old fashioned wealthy entrepreneur and is all about appearances. In his eyes having a gay son can only diminish his social status, and he refuses to let that happen, at the price of losing his only son. Refusing to allow Bentley financial freedom and ownership of the family's valuable assets while simultaneously disgracing their name he also renounces Bentley as an heir to the family businesses and fortune.
Things quickly go south with his lover Warren as he refuses to go public with their relationship and actually ends up breaking it off with Bentley for a woman. Bentley decides to relocate to Miami and opens a successful modeling agency but that also goes south then the recession hits. Along with being ostracized by his father comes being broke and Bentley's modeling agency is in shambles desperately needing a windfall. Refusing to call his father and ask for help Bentley reluctantly and in distress takes a lucrative modeling contract that seems a bit shady. The first tip offs that this modeling gig isn't cookie cutter clean is the host only wants gay, bisexual, or open minded male models. Second the host of the party won't even be revealed until the party began, and last Bentley and all of the his models are required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Red flags waved in Bentley's mind but he decides to ignore them and hope for the best since the agency really needs the money. The host of the party turns out to be the most powerful African American in Hollywood, Seth Sinclair. During these parties everyone in attendance is obligated to refer to him as The Emperor. When one of the models does not leave the party that night Bentley is extremely worried, especially since that model just so happens to be Jah, the young former foster youth Bentley has been mentoring for years. Jah was allowed to attending this party against Bentley's better judgement and overnight he seems to be at the beck and call of this down low celebrity and in increasingly dangerous predicaments. Jah is quickly captivated and so enraptured by The Emperor's gifts, attention, and riches he is actually convinced he has finally found the unconditional true love he has been longing for. Never mind that Seth forces him to miss college to meet him where ever he may be in the country, or that Seth introduces him to drugs, and also demands he have sex with his friends.
Bentley is far from naïve and realizes Jah is getting in too deep right away. He tries but it is too late to talk any sense into his young friend. Regardless, Bentley is determined to protect Jah whether he agrees he is in trouble or not, and will go forth with rescuing him by any means necessary. Even if that means threatening to out the powerful down low superstar Seth Sinclair. Meanwhile Bentley has his own problems of the heart when his ex-lover Warren turns up. He falls back into Warren's bed easily and it is absolutely disheartening to see a Bentley waste his time yet again on the man that plans to marry a woman and to never come out of the closet publicly. Bentley is without a doubt lowering his standards just to be in Warren's presence. It is very contradictory of him to try to teach Jah the ropes when he is just as starry eyed, dreamy faced, hopeful, and naive when it comes to men as his young protégé.
The title of this novel leads readers to believe the focal point will be Bentley and his father's disagreement of his lifestyle, but that is merely the distance subplot. Bentley and his father interact only in the beginning and end of this novel after a health scare. This novel is about Jah, and the secret underworld he got sucked into. Personally I would have like if the author allowed us to read more about Jah and Seth's time together. Nevertheless he gave enough info to make us despise Seth and have readers completely rooting for Jah. I love the way E. Lynn Harris tied the 2008 Presidential Elections and the Barack Obama's inauguration into the story line. Also, I've always liked how his novels tended to be uplifting for African Americans and gays, unfortunately I didn't get that from this one. This go round his work seemed to perpetuate racial inequality in the black community by E. Lynn Harris describing repeatedly that the most gorgeous characters and models were of either mixed heritage, had light skin, and or green eyes. Down low and gay stereotypes seemed magnified and in full effect as well. All in all this novel was drama filled and although slightly predictable it was hard to put down. Sadly, the ending totally left us hanging and I don't think we will ever know what happens.
In My Father's House by E Lynn Harris August 26, 2010 Shay C (USA) Miami-based Bentley L. Dean is the successful owner of the top modeling agency Picture Perfect, in South Beach. He's got everything he could ever want: money and power. Bentley's come out to his parents, been disowned by his father. Bentley soon finds himself struggling to keep his business from going under and makes a deal that will not only change his business but his life as well. Bentley reluctantly agrees to supply "eye candy" in the form of his youngest, sexiest male models to a VIP function at the Prosperity Gentleman's Club. Hosted by closeted celebrity Seth Sinclair, the party turns out to be a lavish orgy of older men savoring all the sexual delights Bentley's models have to offer; and one of the young men Bentley's been mentoring, Jah, winds up caught in Seth's clutches. Seth is very handsome, very wealthy--and very married, and Bentley fears he may be dangerous as well.
AS much as I love books by E Lynn Harris, I was very disappointed with this one. The ending leaves you wondering did you miss something and leaves many unanswered questions. Luckily, we have his other titles to enjoy.
