Amazon.com Review I Am Not Myself These Days is Josh Kilmer-Purcell's outrageously intimate memoir of a young man living a double life in the heady days and nights of mid-'90s New York City. As we follow Kilmer-Purcell through alcohol-fueled nights and a love affair with Jack, a crack-addicted male escort, he offers up an alternative universe where normal is "a Normal Rockwell painting that, if you leaned in close, would discover is made up entirely of misfits." By day, Josh drudges off to a Soho-based advertising firm where he creates ad campaigns for corporate clients. At night, he dons live goldfish to complete the look of Aqua, a 7-foot-tall award-winning drag queen who trolls gay clubs in search of her next drink/one night stand. In between, he spends his time trying to build a stable, loving relationship with someone whose beeping pager is a constant reminder of the pair's almost inevitable fate. Yet even as Josh's escapades get increasingly absurd, Kilmer-Purcell is always there to remind us that the story we're reading is real, and that fundamental human emotions and desires are essentially universal. In the end, everyone just wants to be loved and to fit in somewhere. And while the lesson may seem hokey at times, Kilmer-Purcell's sharp wit rescues the memoir from becoming an exaggerated sob story: The night before any major holiday is always a blockbuster night at gay clubs. Thousands... across the city fortifying themselves for long trips home where they'll be met with awkward silences, stilted conversations and cousins with whom they'd experimented with decades ago. From start to finish, I Am Not Myself These Days is an extraordinary journey into an amazing life. To be a fly on the wall is an adventure that should not be missed. --Gisele Toueg
Product Description
I Am Not Myself These Days follows a glittering journey through Manhattan's dark underbelly -- a shocking and surreal world where alter egos reign and subsist (barely) on dark wit and chemicals...a tragic romantic comedy where one begins by rooting for the survival of the relationship and ends by hoping someone simply survives. Kilmer-Purcell is a terrifically gifted new literary voice who straddles the divide between absurdity and normalcy, and stitches them together with surprising humor and lonely poignancy. As Booklist raved "as tart and funny as a Noel Coward play, for Kilmer-Purcell is especially good at dialogue, and, as in Coward's best plays, under the comedy lies the sad truth that even at our best, we are all weak, fallible fools. Again and again in this rich, adventure-filled book, Kilmer-Purcell illustrates the truth of Blake's proverb, 'The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.'"

GET IT NOW! August 24, 2010 Dan Brooks (LAMESA, TX, US) Not only is this an amazing tale, the fact that it's true makes it that much crazier! But it is the way the story is told that keeps you reading way after you should have put it down and gone to sleep. I would recommend anyone read this book. I literally LOLed at several points!

FABulous August 12, 2010 CoLiamPet (New York) One of the most fascinating reads in quite a long while. This novel brings the reader to the edge of heartbreak and tugs them back in with fits of laughter. Insightful, deliciously witty, captivating beyond compare and wickedly outrageous. One of the best autobiographical pieces I have ever read. Josh makes even the most depraved behavior seem charming and delightful. This is the kind of novel that keeps one reading hours after bedtime, furiously flipping the pages to see what happens next and happy that they did. A must read for those who enjoy a little twist of the twisted!
Loved it !! June 30, 2010 Author (Brooklyn, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I cannot imagine living with a crack-addicted whore who entertains clients in our apartment, perhaps when I was new to the city, inexperienced, and naive . . . naaaah, still wouldn't live with a crack whore. I especially wouldn't have my first sexual encounter with my partner occur in front of a crowd of people like a performance. There is love in this book but it's first love, young love, desperate love, not a lasting love. I know what the attraction is. The hooker is handsome, smart, funny, and he thinks Josh is smarter, maybe funnier, and so different than what he is used to. Innocent even. It was beautifully told but more like witnessing a couple of guys holding hands and jumping into a black pit. Seven months passes so quicly. I could not put the book down as it had a strong narrative drive, along with some great characters. The sleaze factor, though strong, is mitigated by the soft touch and gauzy focus the author uses. I am surprised I missed this memoir as it is something I would have loved to read when it came out. It is only through watching the TV show that I realized there was a book, and I imagine Kilmer-Purcell has got a whole new round of royalties since the show. I would have NEVER imagined the man on the TV show having a life like this.
Four Stars. Great Read!
I'm NOT an alcoholic because HE's a crack addict! [and such like] May 20, 2010 Charles Slovenski (Geneva Switzerland) 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, my reaction to this book is very harsh. Throughout the reading of it I kept thinking that someone must have told the author to write down all his adventures because they are so interesting. In fact the story could be fun if it were told with a sense of irony, or a sense of humor, or a sense of recognition but the author's voice is lacking any sense of direction. Hang on, here-it-is-the-point: we are to take seriously the invisible bond that is the relationship between the drunk drag queen and the crack-addicted prostitute. I felt neither laughter nor tears in this flat recitative.
It's a life-changer due to make you think and feel and experience alongside the character March 22, 2010 Riley (Virginia) Honestly, this book was incredible. Really witty, funny and well-written along with painstakingly real. You pause judgment to enter in to Josh and Jack's life and what you discover is everything society has deemed morally wrong, yet it feels right inside. You're living alongside them and you experience the successes and utter downfalls of their relationship and lives.
This book should be read immediately. I came into it with no expectations and finished with a yearning to buy the book and make a yearly reading of it.
"I laughed. I cried. I laughed again." Simon Doonan said about the book. I promise you'll do the same.
